License Renewal
Step-by-Step Instructions for License Renewal
Renewing your license through the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System (NMLS) is an annual requirement for mortgage loan originators (MLOs). The renewal period runs from November 1 to December 31 each year. To ensure a smooth renewal process, follow these steps:
1. Prepare for Renewal
Review State-Specific Requirements: Each state may have unique renewal requirements, including deadlines, fees, and additional documentation. Be sure to check your state’s renewal checklist to ensure compliance.
Complete Continuing Education (CE):
Ensure all required continuing education (CE) courses are completed before attempting to renew. You can verify your CE status by logging into your NMLS account and reviewing your education record. Update Your NMLS Record: Review and update your Individual (MU4) Form to ensure all personal details, employment history, and disclosure questions are current.
2. Attest to Your Record
Determine Renewal Responsibility:
Confirm whether you or your sponsoring company is responsible for submitting the renewal request. If your company is handling the renewal, you must complete the attestation before they can proceed.
Attestation Process:
• Log in to your NMLS account.
• Navigate to the Renewals tab.
• Select Attest for Company if your company is submitting the renewal or Attest and Pay if you are submitting it yourself.
• Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the attestation.
3. Submit Renewal Request
If Submitting Yourself:
• After attesting, go to the Renewals tab.
• Click Attest and Pay.
• Select the licenses you wish to renew and proceed with payment.
If Company-Submitted:
• Ensure you have completed the attestation process.
• Notify your company that they can now submit the renewal request on your behalf.
4. Pay Renewal Fees
Accepted Payment Methods:
• NMLS accepts payments via ACH (electronic bank transfer) or credit card (Visa or MasterCard).
• Credit card transactions include a 2.5% service fee.
5. Monitor Renewal Status
Check Status Regularly:
After submitting the renewal request, log in to your NMLS account periodically to monitor your renewal status.
Address Any Deficiencies:
If there are any deficiencies or additional requirements, resolve them as soon as possible to prevent processing delays.
6. Reinstatement Period
If the renewal deadline of December 31 is missed, some states offer a reinstatement period from January 1 through the end of February. During this time, licenses can still be renewed, though additional fees and requirements may apply. Be sure to check state-specific policies regarding reinstatement.
Additional Support
For further assistance, the NMLS Call Center is available Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM Eastern Time. They can be reached by calling 855-665-7123.
